🔮 What does copper symbolise? Venus, Cyprus and the ankh
- ♀ The Venus sign. Alchemists used planet names for their metals: the Sun for gold, the Moon for silver, Venus for copper. The mirror-with-a-cross glyph ♀ is the copper symbol too: love, beauty and softness in one stroke.
- Cyprus and cuprum. The word copper comes from the Latin Cyprium aes, the metal from Cyprus, later shortened to cuprum. Cyprus was Aphrodite's island in Greek myth: the west wind carried her ashore there in sea foam. So the Roman name for the metal ties it to the goddess of love, and the Greeks saw Aphrodite in Egypt's Hathor too.
- The mirror and the ankh. Egyptian hand mirrors were polished copper alloy, and the Egyptian words for mirror and life sound the same. A copper disc on a handle playfully echoes the ankh, the sign of life.
🌙 Where does copper's meaning come from? Four traditions
Copper was the first metal people ever worked; beads more than 10,000 years old have been dug up in northern Iraq.
Egypt: Hathor's mirrors
Egyptian mirrors were cast in copper alloy, and their handles often carried the emblem of Hathor, the cow-eared goddess of love, beauty and music. One was laid some 3,500 years ago in the coffin of a woman named Hatnefer, beside her cosmetic box. Copper here was beauty and the self reflected back.
Alchemy: copper belongs to Venus
Centuries later the alchemists gave each of their seven metals a planet, and copper went to Venus. That pairing is why copper still carries a gentle, heart-warming reputation, and why so many pieces are given as tokens of love.
The Great Lakes: copper as kin
The peoples of the western Great Lakes were working native copper from about 4,000 BC, from deposits along the southern shore of Lake Superior. Later the Hopewell carried that copper nearly 800 miles to the Scioto River Valley and shaped it into earspools, headdresses and gleaming falcon effigies. They treated the finished copper as a living thing with a spirit, and gave it a ceremonial burial in their mounds. Copper was kin.
The Northwest Coast: a copper that holds a family's honour
Among the Kwakwaka'wakw, a copper, ťłakwa, is a worked plate with a face and a T across it, first made from native copper from Alaska and the Nass River. Each has its own name, history and value, and that value rises every time it changes hands. Buying, selling or breaking a copper all happen at the potlatch. It is a living tradition with its own names and rules, and it belongs to the Kwakwaka'wakw.
