To use incense sticks, light the scented tip, then gently put out the flame. Leave the stick in a suitable holder, where its glowing ember can release fragrance and the ash lands safely. That little glow is what you want, not a candle-like flame. You can stop before the stick finishes, too. A short, lovely pause does not need a whole stick or a room full of smoke.

How do you light an incense stick? ✨
Set everything up while the stick is still cold. You need your incense, a matching holder, a lighter or matches, and a stable, heat-resistant surface. Keep the pack beside you so you can follow its directions.
Look at the uncoated end. Some sticks have a bare bamboo stem; others have no wooden core. The holder must support your type without letting it slip. If the fit looks doubtful, sort that out before adding fire.
- Give the ash somewhere to land. Position the unlit stick over the holder's tray. Check that the entire burning length sits within the ash-catching area.
- Light the scented tip. Hold the flame to the tip until it catches. Keep your fingers at the cool end.
- Put out the flame gently. The tip should smoulder, with a small glow and a thread of smoke.
- Check the setup again. The stick should stay steady. Enjoy the scent from a little distance, not with your face over the smoke.
This tip-lighting method is the ordinary starting point for stick incense. Your packet may add instructions for its particular form.
Keep the room ventilated and the holder clear of curtains, paper and anything that can catch fire. Keep children and pets away. Stay nearby, and put the incense out before you leave or sleep. If the smoke feels uncomfortable, stop and let fresh air through. Ventilation and staying with the burn belong to the ritual, not just the tidy-up.
How do you put it out and relight it? 🌙
Blowing out the flame starts the smouldering stage. It does not necessarily put the incense out.
To finish, hold the cool end and press the glowing tip against a separate heat-resistant, nonflammable dish. Never stub it into a wooden holder. Leave any detached hot tip on the dish until it is fully out and cold. Check that the stick no longer glows or smokes.
Let the remainder cool completely before you store it. To use it later, return it to a suitable holder and light the tip again. Keeping the unburnt part dry lets you save it for another pause. Follow any different extinguishing directions on your pack.

The Koru incense box and Greek Trellis incense box are made for incense sticks. Their directions say to extinguish the flame before placing the incense inside, then replace the carved lid. These are purpose-made burners; an ordinary wooden storage box is not a substitute.
Before lighting, check that your stick fits the supports and clears the wood. Do not assume a box suits every coreless stick. If the pack and holder instructions do not give you a clear match, ask us first.
Why does your incense keep going out?
Start with what you can see. More flame is not the answer to every problem.

Built-up residue can interfere with burning. Cleaning also depends on the holder's material, so do not soak a wooden box as though it were a glazed dish.
Keep unused sticks dry, away from direct sunlight and hot, damp places. If a stick repeatedly fails in a clean, matching holder, stop experimenting with extra heat. Keep the packaging and ask the supplier about that batch.

Start with one fragrance rather than a whole scented orchestra. Let the room tell you when you have enough: the aim is a scent you enjoy, not visible haze.

Frequently asked questions
Do incense sticks need charcoal?
Ordinary self-burning incense sticks do not need a charcoal disc: you light their tip. Loose resins use a different setup. Read the label before treating another form of incense like a stick.
How long should I burn a stick?
You do not have to burn it to the end. Follow the packet's directions and stop when you have enough scent. Stick length and formulation differ, so a single burn-time promise will not fit every pack.
Can I leave incense burning while I fall asleep?
No. Put it out before you get sleepy or leave the room. A finished scent ritual can still feel special: let the holder cool, put the matches away, and enjoy the quiet.
