An oracle deck is a set of cards with its own theme, its own card count and its own little guidebook. There are no suits to learn and no fixed 78-card system to memorise. That is the whole difference from tarot, in one breath.
So which should you start with? Choose an oracle deck if you want to begin tonight. Choose tarot if you want a structure to study for years. Plenty of people keep both on the shelf and reach for whichever suits the morning.
So what is an oracle deck?
Pick one up and three things stand out straight away.
First, the artwork leads. An oracle deck is built around a single idea — the moon, animals, crystals, a season — and every card is a variation on that theme.
Second, many decks print the meaning right on the card. Turn over the fox in the Animal Spirit Oracle and it simply says focused, clever. You have a starting point before you open anything.

Here is the detail most deck guides leave out. Tarot did not start as a fortune-telling tool at all.
Tarocchi was a popular trick-taking card game in 15th-century Europe, and it is still played today. Yale's Cary Collection holds one of the three oldest surviving Italian tarot decks, painted around 1440 to 1445. Only 67 of its cards are left. A complete tarocchi deck ran to 78 cards: trumps, court cards and numbered pips across four suits — batons, cups, swords and coins.
The cards were only used for fortune telling from the 18th century. So when tarot feels like a structured game with rules, that is because it once was one. 🔮

Oracle decks carry none of that inheritance. No suits, no trumps, no rules to win by — which is why they feel lighter in the hand.
How do you use oracle cards?
Your first five minutes 🌙
You do not need a ritual to start. You do need a small habit. Here is the one that sticks.
- Sit somewhere quiet. The edge of the bed is fine.
- Shuffle until it feels done. Thirty seconds is plenty.
- Ask one open question. Not will I get the job, but what should I bring to today.
- Take the top card. Look at it before you look anything up.
- Then read the guidebook page. Keep whichever line lands.
That is a whole reading: one card, five minutes, done before the kettle boils.
Three spreads that suit an oracle deck
The one-card weather report. Pull a single card each morning for a week. Write one word next to it in your diary. By Sunday you will see a pattern you did not plan.
The three-card walk. Card one is what is here now. Card two is what is being asked of you. Card three is one small next step. It answers the question people actually arrive with.
The blind spot pair. Lay one card face up for what you are looking at. Lay a second face down for what you are not. Turn it over last. This one is quietly brilliant with an oracle deck, because the cards are not tied to fixed positions.

Four questions sort a wall of decks in about a minute.
Would you look at this art every day? You will see these cards more than any print on your wall. If the images do not pull you in on the shelf, they will not pull you in at 7am.
Does the theme match the questions you actually ask? Moon phases and timing suit anyone who plans by the month, so the 48-card Moonology Messages Oracle fits. If you think in seasons, the 44-card Seasons of the Witch: Samhain Oracle is built for exactly that. Crystal people tend to reach for the Astral Realms Crystal Oracle.
How big are the cards? This one surprises people. Sizes vary a lot. Our Osho Zen cards are 7.3 by 10.8 cm, and the listing says that shape makes them easier to shuffle. The boxed Animal Spirit Oracle measures 11.5 by 15 cm. Big cards look glorious laid out and are harder to handle in small hands, so it is worth checking.
How deep is the guidebook? A thin leaflet gives you a sentence per card. A proper booklet gives you a page and a spread. Beginners are usually happier with the booklet.

What a deck costs in New Zealand
Oracle decks start under NZ$25 — the 44-card Archangel Animal Oracle is NZ$23. Many sit around NZ$45 to NZ$50, and a few deluxe sets go higher. You can also browse the oracle decks on their own.
One honest note: we hold most titles in ones and twos, so decks sell out and come back. If a deck is there and you love it, take it. You can also come and hold them at Shop 62 inside Westfield Manukau, which is the only real way to judge card size.

Looking after your cards ✨
Cards are paper, and paper has simple needs. Te Papa's guidance for looking after paper covers all of it.
Handle them with clean, dry hands. Keep them out of strong light, which fades paper and slowly weakens it — so a sunny windowsill is the worst shelf in the house. Store them somewhere cool, dry and dark, at a steady temperature. Keep them flat rather than bent or folded.

Then there is cleansing, which is tradition rather than conservation. Some people knock the deck once between readings. Common questions
Do I need to learn tarot before oracle cards?
No. An oracle deck carries no shared system, so there is nothing to know first. Many readers start with oracle and add tarot later.
How many cards are in an oracle deck?
It varies, because the deck's creator decides. On our own shelf they run from about 24 cards to 62 — the Fantasy Cats Oracle has 24, the Sacred Creators Oracle has 62, and 44 is the most common size by far. Tarot is the fixed one at 78, although our Osho Zen deck adds a Master card and runs to 79.
Can you buy an oracle deck for yourself?
Yes. The old line about waiting for someone to gift you a deck is folklore, not a rule. Most people buy their own, and choosing it is half the pleasure.
Are tarot cards older than oracle cards?
Tarot is the older object by a long way. Italian tarocchi decks survive from about 1440. They were a card game first, and were only used for fortune telling from the 18th century.
How do I cleanse a new deck?
Shuffle it thoroughly, then leave it somewhere quiet overnight — many people choose moonlight. Skip water entirely. Damp is what paper cards do not forgive.
