Selenite takes its name from Selene, the Moon. Hold it to the light and you can see why. The pearly white glow feels like a full moon behind thin cloud.

💎 Is a selenite lamp really selenite?
Most silky white “selenite” lamps are technically satin spar. Selenite and satin spar are both forms of the same mineral, gypsum. Gypsum is a soft calcium-sulfate mineral with water held inside its structure. Clear, glassy pieces are strictly called selenite.
Crystal shops use “selenite” for both. Your lamp is still genuine gypsum. The satin spar form is simply easier to carve and gives that lovely striped glow.
Gypsum is extremely soft. It sits at just 2 on the Mohs scale and can scratch under a fingernail. That softness creates beautiful carving, but it also asks you to handle the lamp gently.

The materials behave differently too. A salt lamp can “weep” salty moisture in humid air. Selenite is soft gypsum and can lose its surface when wet. Both need a dry home, but selenite is the one you must never wash.
Choose salt for a cosy amber cave. Choose selenite for a clean white moonbeam. If your room has warm timber and deep colours, salt may melt into it. If the room is pale, silver or celestial, selenite often feels made for the space.
There is no wrong choice if you love both. Put the salt lamp in the snug corner where you read, and the selenite lamp near the crystals or journal. One feels like an ember. The other feels like the moon.

Keep it dry and away from heat. Gypsum can dissolve in water and is very heat-sensitive. Never wash, soak, mist or spray your lamp. Keep it away from heaters, hot surfaces and strong direct heat.
Dust it with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. Lift it instead of sliding it, because the base scratches easily. Use only the bulb or integrated LED listed for your exact lamp.
