If you want one stone to start with, make it lepidolite. ๐ It is the soft lilac mica that people press into each other's hands when a week has gone flat. Citrine is the other classic, for when the colour has drained out of everything. Smoky quartz is for the days you simply have to get through.
But "which crystals for depression" is not quite the right question. The better one is: what kind of flat are you today? Here are seven stones sorted by the feeling, each with a job and a place to live.
Crystals for depression: choose your stone by the kind of flat day โจ
Start at the row that sounds like your week. You only need one.
| The day you are having | The stone | Its job on that day | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired-tired, and you cannot settle | Lepidolite | Softens a mind that will not switch off | Nightstand |
| Everything has gone grey | Citrine | Puts some colour back in a dull week | Where the morning light falls |
| You are carrying something heavy | Smoky quartz | Grounds you through one hard day | Worn at the throat |
| You cannot get started | Carnelian | Gets the first task moving | On the desk, in view |
| You are being hard on yourself | Rose quartz | Answers self-criticism with kindness | Coat or trouser pocket |
| Sleep was the thing that broke first | Amethyst | Marks the end of the day, so rest can start | Beside the bed |
| The house feels cold and flat | Orange calcite | Warms up the room you sit in | Shelf at eye height |
The seven stones, one at a time
๐ Lepidolite, for wired-tired evenings
Lepidolite is a lithium-bearing mica, and it looks like it: soft mauve and pale grey sheets with a faint glitter. Crystal people call it the settler, and it is the stone most often handed to someone in a heavy patch. Hold it for three slow breaths before the light goes out. Then leave it where you will see it in the morning.
A raw lepidolite piece is about NZ$6, and a lepidolite bead bracelet starts around NZ$15 if you would rather wear it.
โ๏ธ Citrine, for when everything has gone grey
Citrine is the honey-coloured quartz that tradition calls the merchant's stone, kept for luck, warmth and a lift. It is made for a New Zealand winter that has outstayed its welcome โ dark mornings, a cold hallway, and a month with no colour in it. Set it where the early light lands, on the windowsill above the kettle. Seeing it before the day starts is most of the ritual.
A citrine chip bracelet is around NZ$10. There is more on the stone in our citrine meaning guide.
๐ Smoky quartz, for carrying something heavy
Smoky quartz runs from pale tan to almost black, and it feels like it means business. It is the grounding stone of the set. People wear it on the day of the appointment, the meeting, or the conversation they have been dreading. Wear it at the throat so you notice it, then put it back in the same dish at night and let the day end there.
A smoky quartz point pendant is NZ$19.99.
๐ฏ๏ธ Carnelian, for when you cannot get started
Carnelian is a warm orange chalcedony, coloured by iron, and it has been carved into seals and talismans for thousands of years, and tradition has long called it a courage stone. This is for the flat that looks like procrastination. Keep it on the desk, not in a drawer. Touch it before the first task of the day, not after โ the point is to start, not to reward yourself for starting.
A carnelian point pendant is NZ$19.99, and the chip bracelet is around NZ$8. Our carnelian guide goes further into its story.
โจ Rose quartz, for when you are hard on yourself
Low weeks are loud with self-criticism, and that is rose quartz's particular job here. It asks nothing of you: no grids, no moon calendar, no programming. It simply keeps turning up, soft and unbothered, on the days you are not being soft with yourself. Keep a small heart in the pocket you use most. Hold it for one slow breath the moment you catch that voice starting up.
A rose quartz heart with a pouch is NZ$15.99 and fits in a closed hand.
๐ฎ Amethyst, for when sleep broke first
Sometimes the low mood arrives after the sleep goes, not before. Amethyst is the old answer to that. Greek legend tied it to Dionysus, the god of wine, and people wore it believing it kept them clear-headed; it has been the nightstand stone ever since. Its job here is punctuation โ putting it down is how the day gets an ending.
A tumbled amethyst is NZ$4.99, which makes it the easiest place to start. Our amethyst guide covers the forms in detail.
๐ฟ Orange calcite, for a house that feels cold
Orange calcite glows like apricot light through a window, and it is kept for warmth and a bit of cheer. It works as an object in the room rather than something you carry. Put it on the shelf your eyes land on when you walk in. It is a soft stone, so keep it dry and away from knocks.
An orange calcite piece is about NZ$5.
How to use crystals for low mood: one stone, one week
A routine only helps if it survives a bad morning. So keep it small enough to do badly.
- Pick one stone from the table and leave the rest alone for now.
- Give it a home โ a dish by the door, the nightstand, your coat pocket.
- Touch it before the kettle, for three slow breaths. That is the whole practice.
- Put it back in the same place at night, so tomorrow needs no decisions.
Do that for a week before you add anything. If you want a second stone, pair one you carry with one that stays in a room โ carnelian in the pocket, orange calcite on the shelf. Two is plenty. Any more and you stop noticing them, which is the only real mistake here. If what you are feeling is closer to grief, start with crystals for grief and loss instead.
Choosing a piece ๐
Four forms cover almost everyone, and the choice is mostly about where the stone will live.
- A tumbled stone from around NZ$5 โ pocket-sized, the easiest first stone.
- A chip bracelet from around NZ$8 โ one size, worn every day.
- A point pendant at NZ$19.99 โ keeps the stone at the throat where you notice it.
- A round bead bracelet from around NZ$15 โ four sizes, the nicest to wear.
Buying for someone having a terrible month? The rose quartz heart below, at NZ$15.99, is the easy gift, because it arrives in its own pouch and needs no explaining. Everything above was in stock when we wrote this, and you can see the whole shelf in our crystals collection or browse crystals for positive energy. We are at Shop 62, Westfield Manukau if you would rather choose by hand, and shipping is free nationwide over NZ$99.
Looking after them
Care splits neatly into two groups, and getting it wrong is the one way to spoil a stone.
The hard ones. Amethyst, citrine, rose quartz and smoky quartz are all quartz at 7 on the Mohs scale, and carnelian is just under at 6.5 to 7. A rinse in warm soapy water is safe for all of them. Skip steam and sudden temperature changes. Keep amethyst and citrine out of strong sunlight, because both can fade after long exposure to intense light.
The soft ones. Lepidolite is 2.5 to 3 and splits into sheets along one perfect cleavage. Orange calcite is 3 and splits three ways. Dust those two with a dry cloth, keep them off the bathroom windowsill, and never soak them. No stone here belongs in drinking water.
For cleansing and charging, our guide to cleansing and charging crystals has the gentle methods that suit soft stones.
Questions people ask ๐ฎ
Which crystal is best for depression?
Lepidolite, if you want one answer. It is the stone most often given to someone in a flat patch, and it is gentle enough to live on a nightstand for months. If the heaviness has a shape you recognise, use the table above instead: citrine for greyness, carnelian for stalling, rose quartz for self-criticism, amethyst for broken sleep.
Do crystals actually do anything?
Researchers have looked, and what they could count came out much the same either way. Anyone who has carried a stone through a bad month will tell you that misses the point, and we are with them. A stone gives a feeling somewhere to go. It marks the start of the day, it is warm in the hand, and it is a small kindness you chose for yourself โ which is exactly what a flat week is short of.
What if it is low mood and anxiety together?
Very often it is both, and the two want different stones. Lepidolite is the overlap: it is the settler for a restless head and the comfort stone for a heavy one. Keep it for the evenings, and give the daytime job to a stone from the table above. Our guide to crystals for anxiety and stress covers the racing-worry side properly.
Where should I keep the stone?
Where you will meet it without trying. Bedside for amethyst and lepidolite, pocket or wrist for rose quartz and carnelian, and a shelf at eye height for orange calcite. A beautiful stone in a drawer does nothing for anyone.
How do I cleanse a stone for low mood?
Gently, and not often. Moonlight on a windowsill overnight suits every stone on this page. Smoke from a smudge stick or incense works too. Save water for the quartz family, and give lepidolite and orange calcite nothing wetter than a dry cloth.
Where to start
Start with one stone, one place, and one week. ๐ The morning you reach for it without thinking is the morning it has started doing its job.
